Standardizing the Enablement of Innovation: ISO 56000 for Innovation Management

Can you standardize innovation? Our team here at Ever Evolving, Inc has been involved in the enablement of innovation for nearly 20 years. Over that time, we have learned a few things about how innovation works and how to ensure its success. We also came to the hard truth that innovation CANNOT be standardized.

How would someone standardize

  • creativity?
  • flashes of brilliance?
  • art?

We would venture to say that you can’t, you won’t, and you are wasting your time if you try. And while you might not be able to standardize innovation you CAN standardize how you enable it, how you improve it and most importantly, how you manage it.

In 2017 we created the InnoSpecting Framework with the idea that we could take Innovation best practices from our experience and research with numerous Fortune 500 organizations and the United Statement Department of Defense. We decided the best way to share that knowledge with the world was to create the InnoSpecting Framework. The only problem in our eyes was the amount of time it would take to communicate that knowledge with everyone that we knew could use the additional insight and support.

We started to look for organizations that shared the same passion and understanding around innovation as we do. When we found out that the international community was standardizing the practices around innovation management, we knew we needed to be involved. We reached out to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and in turn the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) who put us in touch with International Association of Innovation Professionals (IAOIP). From there, we joined Technical Committee (TC) 279, the group responsible for the development of the ISO 56000 series of standards.

ISO 56000 is a new series of standards developed for Innovation Management. The foremost experts in Innovation Management, Quality, and Lean have come together to capture internationally recognized best practices and processes around the management of innovation.
